Sunbury-on-Thames is London’s closest racecourse. It is located near
Richmond and stages both Jump and Flat racing throughout the year. The
feature race meeting is the Christmas Festival on 26th and 27th of December.
During the summer, Wednesday themed evening racing is popular. This is a
high quality track with the feature event over the sticks being the 2 day
Christmas meeting that features the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day. They now race on a Polytrack surface, consisting of two ovals, the longer one is 10 furlongs in length, with a run in of about 3 furlongs. The shorter one is approximately 1 mile round with a run in of only 2 furlongs. The national hunt course has a 1.75 mile circumference and the fences are quite stiff.
